What is a RABS?

A RABS (Restricted Access Barrier System) is a physical barrier that limits direct access to critical areas. The system incorporates unidirectional airflow, positive pressure, HEPA filtration, and ergonomic glove port design.

There are two main types of RABS:

1、Open RABS

Environmental interaction: Installed in a classified room (usually Class B), limited interaction is allowed through glove ports or controlled access points.

Doors or panels: Can be opened under controlled conditions, such as during setup or cleaning.

Airflow: Unidirectional HEPA filtered laminar airflow ensures that the room maintains a Class A environment. Air is usually exhausted by overpressure into the surrounding Class B environment.

Contamination risk: Higher than closed RABS, but much lower than traditional open systems.

Application: Suitable for processes that require occasional manual intervention and medium contamination risk.

2、Closed RABS

Complete isolation: Maintains complete sealing during operation. No doors should be opened when handling product.

Intervention: Only through integrated gloves or automated systems.

Airflow: Recirculated and HEPA-filtered air keeps constant Grade A conditions inside.

Risk of contamination: Very low, comparable to isolators, but H₂O₂ decontamination is not possible due to lack of ISO 10648-compliant airtightness.

Applications: Ideal for critical processes such as aseptic filling where maximum product protection is required.
